Problems

Brunei’s sea turtle population is declining as their breeding grounds are being destroyed and eggs being hunted for human consumption.

Possible solutions

The awareness of university students of the plight of Brunei’s sea turtles should be raised. Students should be encouraged to take initiative and play an active role in saving turtles from extinction, either by donating money (adopting a turtle) or by helping to keep Brunei’s beaches free from litter. Students should be discouraged from buying turtle eggs.

Actions taken

Students were asked to participate in an interview session consisting of four short quetsions to allow the team members to get a better idea of the extent of student awareness of sea turtle conservation. Posters were put up and brochures were distributed throughout the university to increase awareness and encourage staff and students to help save turtles from extinction. As can be seen in Figure 6 the brochures gave the readers important information on why Brunei turtles face extinction and how the readers could help. Donations were collected for the Turtle Conservation Fund.

UBD students helped the relevant authority to conserve the sea turtles.
